Registration underway
for Community Center Summer Program

Registration began March 24 for the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department’s Summer Youth Program community centers. Participants in the program will enjoy eight weeks of recreation-themed activities, including games, sports, arts and crafts, and a weekly enrichment program in fine arts, science and fitness/nutrition.

These sites accept youngsters ages six to 14.

After March 24, community centers that still have openings will continue registration during regular business hours until all slots are full. Slots range from 40 to 125, depending on the center. Registration for Summer Youth Program school sites, open to youth ages 6 to 12, will be held on Saturday, May 5, from 8 a.m. to noon, with locations to be announced.

The program runs from June 18 through Aug. 10, Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. A free lunch and afternoon snack are included. Fees for the program are based on a sliding scale, according to income and family size. For more information on fees, go to the SYP Fee Flier (PDF).

** Please note that Lincoln Community Center and Melendrez Community Center will serve at Teen Connection sites. Teens can stay physically active and involved at Teen Connection sites during summer. Free supervised recreational program with gym activities are available for teens ages 13 - 18 at Lincoln Community Center, 2915 E. Commerce, and Melendrez Community Center, 5905 W. Commerce, from June 18 through Aug. 10, 2012. Hours vary, depending on the site. Register on the first day of the program.

Community Centers offer A myriad of
programming year-round

A wide variety of programming, including youth sports leagues, arts and crafts, table games, homework assistance, nutrition education, dance and music, is available at Parks and Recreation Department community centers.

Open Play Centers are open Monday through Thursday from 3 to 9 p.m., Friday 3 to 7 p.m., and Saturday 1 to 5 p.m. during the school year. These include John Tobin, Denver Heights, Fairchild, Woodard, Bode, Normoyle, South San, and Meadowcliff.

Regular Centers are open Monday through Thursday from 2 to 9 p.m., Friday 2 to 7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., during the school year. These include Dawson, Father Roman, Harlandale, Miller's Pond, Yates, Melendrez, Ward, Palm Heights, San Juan, Copernicus, Southside Lions, Ramirez, Cuellar, Garza and Hamilton.

Other non-traditional centers include Dorie Miller, whose hours are Tuesday through Thursday 4 to 8 p.m., Friday 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday 1 to 5 p.m., and Fairchild, whose hours are Monday through Friday 3 to 9 p.m.

All the centers except Fairchild will offer an eight-week Summer Youth Program. Summer hours are Monday to Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dorie Miller’s summer hours are Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Summer Youth Program operates from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
