Fiesta getting leaner and greener

Officials add Fit Fiesta component to city's biggest celebration

A year after the successful addition of recycling to Fiesta events, Mayor Julián Castro and the Fiesta San Antonio Commission announced Fit Fiesta on Monday, April 4, 2011.

The effort is designed to build awareness through a concerted effort to highlight healthier options at food booths and to promote Fiesta events that feature physical activity.

Mayor explains Fit Fiesta 2011

"These moments in our city, like Fiesta, provide a fantastic opportunity for us as a community to showcase and make accessible what is possible," Castro said. "Last year, it was recycling. This year it is health and fitness."

Over time, Castro said the efforts are aimed at improving the quality of life of average San Antonians. In its first year, the recycling program netted seven tons of plastic and other materials that would have normally gone into a landfill.

"Little by little, we can get more folks by their own choice to recycle more, eat healthier and to lead a more active lifestyle," Castro said.

Fit Fiesta involves a two-pronged approach:

  • Food. Vendors at many Fiesta events, such as the King William Fair, will feature some healthier options on their menus.
  • Exercise. Folks of all ages can take part in events that feature physical activity, like the San Antonio Roadrunners’ Mission 10K and Kids Run or the Fiesta Fandango, or simply walking during Viva Botánica at the San Antonio Botanical Garden.
