Wellness Initiatives

The City’s Employee Wellness Program offers a wide variety of initiatives for employees to participate in to improve or maintain a healthy lifestyle.  Many of the programs are available to family members, also!

While the City supports employees exercising and participating in healthier lifestyles and activities, whether to participate in an exercise program is totally the individual employee’s decision and responsibility. Any individual deciding to start a fitness regimen or exercise program should consult his/her physician before beginning.

Educational Speakers: Schedule an educational speaker to present to your department / division on any health or wellness topic. Download Wellness Request Forms

Events: Every year, the City of San Antonio promotes participation, formation of teams, and fundraising to our employees for several events in the community. These events are listed below:

  • City Manager’s 5K in December
  • Walk and Roll Rally to Work in May
  • Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and ½ Marathon in November
  • Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in March
  • Step Out Walk to Fight Diabetes in November

Training Sessions: The Employee Wellness program offers various training sessions to employees to help them prepare for different running and walking events. These are constantly changing.  Please see contact the wellness program in regards to up-coming training sessions.

Fitness Center Rates:  The City of San Antonio offers employees special rates to various San Antonio health clubs/fitness centers. See the Fitness Center Rates page for complete details. To enroll at any fitness center, please take your employee ID for proof of employment with the City of San Antonio or Bexar County. For more information, contact 207-9355 or wellness@sanantonio.gov. Please contact the centers directly for more detailed information on family rates.

Weight Watchers at Work: The City currently has three Weight Watchers at Work meeting locations. If you participate in 80% of the meetings (showing proof with receipts), the City will reimburse half of your enrollment fee. You can start a Weight Watchers at Work Program at any City department / division. The three current Weight Watchers at Work locations are:

  • Riverview Towers – Cynthia Ramirez (207- 0518)

  • Convention Center – Vielka Pink (207-8555)

  • One Stop - Nancy Schmitz (207-6056)

Quitline: The City has a customized smoking cessation program called Quitline. Call the Quitline for FREE and confidential counseling and to enroll in a quit smoking program designed just for you. This is available to all City employees and spouses at no cost. If a City employee / spouse participate in a smoking cessation program, they are eligible for FREE nicotine replacement therapy (gum, patches, and lozenges). Phone: 866-605-7848

Monthly Communication: The Wellness Program sends a monthly message to Wellness TeamLeaders that includes various events and health information. The Bathroom Banter is distributed every three weeks and is a one-page newsletter with various health and wellness information and events posted in restrooms at City worksites.

Walking Programs: We have several walking programs available.

  • Walk Across Texas – This is an eight-week program that allows participants to track their progress on-line. View the website for more details: http://walkacrosstexas.tamu.edu/

  • CoSA Walks the Talk – This is a program aimed at promoting physical activity. Participants choose a destination to walk to and the Wellness program will assist in the motivation to reach that destination with small incentives.

  • Personalized Walking Groups – You can create your own walking or physical activity program and the Wellness program will help you develop and implement it.

  • Active for Life – This is a ten-week program sponsored by the American Cancer Society that is tracked on-line. The program uses a point system to measure participant progress toward a pre-determined physical activity goal. HealthPOWER: This is Methodist Healthcare’s workforce health initiative. The objective is to collaborate with employers to identify, address, and eliminate employee health risks before they result in costly healthcare claims.

  • Screenings – We can help you coordinate limited health screenings for the employees in your department through local Methodist Healthcare nurses.

BP Downshift: This is a hypertension outreach program sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals that is targeted at CDL drivers. It is a FREE comprehensive educational program informing CDL drivers on how to lower and maintain a healthy blood pressure. www.drivershealth.com

BP Success Zone: This is a hypertension outreach program sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals designed for anyone. It is a FREE comprehensive educational program informing the general public on how to lower or maintain a healthy blood pressure. www.bpsuccesszone.com
