Fruit & Nut Sampling
During 2003, the Public Center for Environmental Health collected samples of seasonal fruits, vegetables, and nuts grown in residential areas over the contaminated shallow groundwater plume associated with the former Kelly Air Force Base. Samples were analyzed for volatile organic compound (VOC) contamination.

Public Water Supply Testing
At the community’s request, the Public Center for Environmental Health collected 22 drinking water samples from 21 sites within the contaminated shallow groundwater plume surrounding the former Kelly Air Force Base and analyzed them for VOC contamination.

 

 

 

 

Air Monitoring
Monitoring for VOCs and particulate matter began March 2004 and continues throughout the installation of permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) at several locations near the former Kelly Air Force Base.

Well Plugging
Abandoned wells within the contaminated shallow groundwater plume near the former Kelly AFB will continue to be located and plugged (As required by state law) to protect the health and safety of the community. So far, 75 abandoned wells have been plugged in the area.

 

 

 

Sub Slab Gas Sampling
In October 2004, air samples from underneath building foundations located over the plume were analyzed for contaminants. Additional sampling is planned for 2008.

Continuous Water Quality Monitoring
The Public Center for Environmental Health partners with SARA, TCEQ, BMWD, SAWS, and USGS to monitor San Antonio River Basin water quality.
