City of San Antonio Mayor's Initiatives
The Mayor's Initiatives General Fund addresses housing and social services
including mental health and substance abuse.
Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG)
The Emergency Shelter Grant assists those persons who lack shelter, or who
are, or may soon become, homeless.
Funds are primarily used in the following categories:
- Rehabilitation - Renovate/convert a building for use as an emergency
shelter
- Essential Services - Direct services to the homeless
- Operations - Operating costs for an emergency or transitional facility
- Homeless Prevention - Activities designed to prevent incidences of
homelessness
Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) Grant
The Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS Grant addresses housing and
social needs of low income persons with HIV / AIDS and their family members in
the following categories:
- Facility - Based Housing - operation of an AIDS facility
- Scattered - Site Housing - tenant based rental assistance
- Housing Information Services - provide resources and referrals to meet
housing needs
- Supportive Services - provide mental health assessment, transportation,
nutritional services and community engagement
Supportive Housing Program (SHP) Grants
The Supportive Housing Program Grant addresses housing and social services
for the homeless community.
Services include:
- Mental health and substance abuse services
- Essential Services - direct services to the homeless
- Operations - operating costs for an emergency or transitional facility
- Supportive Services - provide mental health assessment, transportation,
nutritional services and community engagement
- Housing - transitional housing and permanent housing.
