HELPFUL HINTS ON SEARCHING
PLEASE NOTE : Using these hints will depend on
the Search Site you are using. Always go to "How To Search"
or a similar area in that site, to learn what hints work best with each
Search Engine.
HINTS :
1. Use lower case whenever possible.
2. To search for 2 or more words together place them
inside quotation marks and/or place a + between them.
3. With some sites, such as Infoseek, ask for one word
or term, then "refine the search" and ask for the
second word, then the third.
4. If you are not satisfied with the results of your search
using one Search Site, try the same search again using a
different site. The results will usually be very different.
5. Familiarize yourself with the differences between sites.
Some sites are SUBJECT DIRECTORIES (Yahoo, for example),
while others are "search engines" that
look for WORDS (Alta Vista, ExCite, HotBot, Lycos and
Infoseek look for words). MetaCrawler is one of several
META SEARCH ENGINES that search other search engines.
6. If you still need help, you may want to visit one of
several web sites that are Web Search Tutorials, such as :
Mining Company, Explanation of search engines + search tips.
